![]() I got both fortresses self sufficient in food and water, along with a decent enough military, by about a year and a half in. *Self sufficient meaning everything could be made in the fortress without any surface access, excluding the surface area I fence in to be only accessible from the underground so I can have a large wood farm. Neither were particularly great, because I sacrificed design efficiency and a well planned fortress to make sure that both of them were at roughly the same benchmarks. my military was a bit weaker than normal, and I had a few more dwarfs tantrum/not finish their artifacts than normal, but. In the end, I managed to get two fortresses almost entirely self sufficient* by the five year mark without too many problems. paste (made at a Mill Stone or Quern) into rock nut paste oil and rock nut press cake. I lowered the max FPS to 50 instead of 100, but that only helped for early on because neither of my computers can really get above 30 once I have 80+ dorfs running around. Filling Dwarf Bellies Producing food is vital in Dwarf Fortress. If I paused one, I would immediately unpause the other and leave it on autopilot. I just put myself through a self imposed hell to get some difficulty out of Vanilla Dwarf Fortress. he must have thought, oh im the justice around here, i can do whatever i want! *punch a passing dwarf in the head killing him* ok my rage is out :P settled down to a peaceful life being justice (only shoved one dwarf in jail since then!) but oh well :P i was also working on a dooms day weapon to flood my entire fortress if the enemy ever got in, i was also making a well from it too, my dwarves can drink from their own doom :P my new fortress has both an underground river and pond for fun, with a river valley that i may bridge across to get to the other mountain side. poking around later i looked again at the dwarf i made captain. so we hauled him outside and tossed him on the ground. i see his body sitting in the middle of the fortress. certainly anything thats within the power of a god to do should be. When one of your dwarves enters a strange mood and makes an artifact furniture thing (like a floor hatch, a quern, a floor grate, a door, amongst others), good. i hada military dwarf and decided to make him captain of the guard first off, all of a sudden (litterally 5 seconds after i did so) i got a message, one of my dwarves died. But if gods worked at the one- stepping speed from Dwarf Fortress where you can move forward a little bit and then do something, like in dwarf mode you basically have control over time in that way, or if you want to pause time and jump between different places and so on. A very unhappy dwarf is either exposed to things that gives him 'happy thoughts' or eventually goes nuts and damages something or someone. i got up to 117 dwarves, and only 9 children so a good work force. Well i finally got bored of my fortress and started a new one.
